Alphabet Sorting Pockets! | Letter Recognition Activity

Needless to say, letter and print recognition is a major component in emergent literacy! This colorful and versatile alphabet (and optional number) sorting activity will help your child practice these skills. This template is designed to help children recognize letterforms in a variety of fonts, and they can utilize color matching as well. More fonts coming soon!

Not only can they practice their letter recognition with this activity, but they can sneak in some fine-motor practice as they pinch and grasp the letters, too!

Simply:

  • Print out two copies of our free template (one for the sorting, and one for the alphabet wall)
  • Cut out each square
  • Laminate for easier gripping and for preserving the letters (optional)
  • Reserve one set, and paste the other set onto the back of small envelopes
  • Glue the envelopes onto your poster, so the pockets face outwards (refer to the photos below)
  • Begin sorting!

Activity Variations

  • Have a scavanger hunt! Scatter the letters around your house or classroom and then sort the letters together once all the letters are collected
  • Letter magnets. Create letter magnets by adding magnets to the back of the letter squares
  • Word spelling. Use the squares to spell out words!
  • Name spelling. Have your child pick out the letters that make up their name.

And there you have it, your alphabet wall!

Happy letter sorting!
